Cellular Diagnostic Port & Baseband Interface

Hardware AccessPre-configured

Overview & Purpose

Modern smartphones and cellular modems expose low-level diagnostic and bootloader interfaces over USB. TelcoChisel provides out-of-the-box arbitration and user-space toolchains to communicate with Qualcomm DIAG interfaces (/dev/ttyUSB*), MediaTek BROM/PreLoader ports, Samsung Shannon trace interfaces, and Osmocom SIMtrace 2 sniffers without root privileges.

Verification Command

Run the following to confirm this configuration is active on your system:

Cellular Diagnostic Port & Baseband Interface — Verification
qcsuper --help && scat --help

Configuration Details & Steps

TelcoChisel applies these settings automatically at ISO build time. The following steps document each configuration item:

  1. 1
Inspect connected diagnostic USB modems and serial ports: ls -l /dev/ttyUSB* /dev/cdc-wdm* 2>/dev/null
  2. 2
Launch QCSuper to capture Qualcomm DIAG telemetry and stream directly to Wireshark: qcsuper --usb-modem /dev/ttyUSB0 --wireshark-live
  3. 3
Decode cellular signaling telemetry from diagnostic captures using SCAT: scat -t qualcomm -u /dev/ttyUSB0 -w /tmp/diag_trace.pcap
  4. 4
Verify permissions and group ownership for dialout communication: id -nG | grep -E 'dialout|plugdev'

Troubleshooting

Common Issues
If `/dev/ttyUSB0` does not appear when connecting a diagnostic smartphone, verify that USB debugging is enabled on the device and that the modem diagnostic mode was activated via device dialer codes or ADB command (`setprop sys.usb.config diag,serial_cdev,rmnet,adb`).

Frequently Asked Questions

What protocols can be observed over the Qualcomm DIAG interface?

The DIAG interface exposes unencrypted radio layer frames directly from the baseband processor, including 2G/3G/4G/5G RRC signaling, NAS mobility management messages, and low-level physical layer CQI/RSSI measurements.

Can FirmWire emulate extracted baseband firmware images?

Yes. TelcoChisel ships FirmWire, an emulation platform based on QEMU and avatar2 that models Samsung Shannon and MediaTek baseband firmware for vulnerability analysis and fuzzing.

Is root required on the smartphone to capture DIAG logs?

On commercial Android handsets, enabling DIAG mode typically requires root privileges or engineering firmware. Dedicated USB modem dongles (such as Quectel or Fibocom) expose DIAG ports natively without handset modification.
