3GPP Rel-17 NTN & Satellite Telecommunications Audit
Overview & Audit Objective
3GPP Release 17 introduces Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) to integrate satellite constellations (LEO, MEO, GEO) directly with 5G NR User Equipment and IoT devices. This playbook guides operators through tracking LEO satellite orbits, calculating dynamic Doppler frequency offsets, capturing L-band/S-band satellite bursts (Iridium / Inmarsat / 5G NTN), and decoding telemetry with gr-satellites.
Execution Steps
- 1Inspect Satellite Tooling & Constellations:
Display available satellite demodulators, center frequencies, and orbit profiles:
Terminal — NTN Status Checktelcosec ntn status - 2Calculate LEO Orbital Doppler Shift:
Compute carrier frequency shifts and receiver search bands for satellite passes:
Terminal — Calculate Dopplertelcosec ntn doppler leo - 3Receive & Demodulate Satellite Signals with SDR:
Capture L-band satellite downlink signals using SDR hardware (USRP / HackRF / LimeSDR) and gr-satellites:
Terminal — Demodulate with gr-satellitesconda activate telcosec-sdr gr_satellites --hexfmt --demod BPSK --rate 250000 /tmp/satellite_iq.raw - 4Parse Satellite Packets & SBD Telemetry:
Extract burst data packets and parse mobile messaging streams using the Iridium Toolkit:
Terminal — Parse Satellite Burstssudo ntn-sat-install iridium-parser -i /tmp/satellite_bursts.bits -o /tmp/iridium-frames.pcap
Evidence & Artifact Archiving
Archive satellite IQ captures and parsed frame PCAPs into a timestamped evidence archive:
